- State Labor holds election-winning lead in WA despite double digit swing
- Federal Labor holds most of its 2022 WA gains
Labor leads the Liberals 56–44 on a two-party preferred basis in a state voting intention poll of 948 Western Australian voters released today by market research and polling company, DemosAU.
Conducted between 30 October – 4 November, respondents were asked “If a State Election for Western Australia was held today, which of the following would you vote for?”
On a primary vote basis, State Labor led on 41%, followed by the Liberals on 34%, Greens 12% and Any Other Candidate 9% and Nationals at 4%. The 8% of respondents who were undecided on voting choice were excluded from the final totals.
Labor was doing best with 35-54 year olds (44%) compared to Liberals at 31%. For 18-34 year olds, the Labor vote was at 36% and Liberals at 28%, and for those aged 55+, Labor polled at 42% and Liberals 40%.
“State Labor is doing better than usual for a centre-left party with voters over 35 year of age, which is underpinning their strong polling lead,” DemosAU Head of Research George Hasanakos said.
“With State Labor attracting support from 1 out of 8 federal coalition voters, the Cook Government is still attracting support from across the political spectrum even though the 2021 Covid election is now a distant memory.”
Mr Hasanakos said this poll showed a significant rebound from 2021 lows for the Liberals.
“If this poll is reflected at the March 2025 State election, the Liberals would win a 14% swing after preferences which on a uniform swing would increase their seat tally from 3 to 14.
“Conversely, this poll shows no real movement for the Nationals, despite being offered as a state-wide option in this poll due to running lower house candidates in metropolitan Perth.”
In regards to Preferred Premier, Roger Cook was in the clear lead at 42% over Liberal Leader Libby Mettam at 29% and Don’t Know at 29%.
Respondents were also surveyed about federal voting intentions with an election due in the first half of 2025.
On a two-party preferred basis, Labor leads the Liberals 52-48. On a primary vote basis the Coalition scored 38%, Labor 34%, Greens 14%, One Nation 6%, Any Other Candidate 8%. The 8% of respondents who were undecided on voting choice were excluded from the final totals.
“This poll shows that Federal Labor is holding most of its electoral gains from its double digit WA swing in 2022, despite a 3% swing to the Coalition after preferences. On a uniform swing, Labor held Tangney and the new urban-rural seat of Bullwinkel would be line-ball.”
In the preferred Prime Minister stakes, Albanese led at 40%, Peter Dutton at 33% and Don’t Know at 27%.
